Healing Trauma with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has garnered recognition from the American Psychological Association as a research-backed therapeutic model adept at treating a range of conditions including Chronic Pain, Depression, Anxiety Disorders, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Trauma related Disorders and Psychosis. At its core, ACT champions the acceptance of emotions and thoughts, while also emphasizing positive behavior change congruent with an individual’s values. This behavioral model seamlessly integrates verbal, experiential, and homework techniques, complemented by mindfulness practices. Such an approach allows clients to actively engage with, rather than avoid, their internal experiences like thoughts, feelings, and sensations without becoming entangled in them, facilitating meaningful and transformative choices.

Using advanced ACT Processes to create behaviour change

Acceptance and commitment therapy employs a variety of verbal and experiential
processes and techniques to assist clients in making life-enhancing choices based on
personally held values.

The behavioural processes implemented in ACT may be learned and understood at many levels, yet they may also remain challenging to implement in a flexible, consistent, and effective fashion. Multiple levels of the process are present in any therapy, including intervention processes. Moving beyond simple technique and into a fluid ACT intervention requires attending to intrapersonal, interpersonal, and overarching and ongoing processes in the context of the therapy.

This workshop will be an intermediate to advanced training focusing on applying ACT to a broad range of issues from four levels of process (i.e. six core processes, interpersonal, intrapersonal,
overarching). It will include role-plays and guided skills development.

Participants will engage in exercises designed to refine and develop their ACT process skills attuning to the relationship and therapeutic stance. Didactics and discussion will be oriented to
increasing flexibility in the use of the core processes and consistent application of the
model.
